John Dewey-- Vita

The young professor pictured on our website (to the left of the AAUP abbreviation) is John Dewey. As a philosophy professor and educational reformer, he helped to begin the American Association of University Professors in 1915. Our organization was founded by a straight-thinking Pragmatist in the academic tradition, and Dewey's reputable and progressive ideas have inspired teachers for generations. ISU's Laboratory School was in many ways established on Dewey's principles from his book, Democracy and Education (1916). The professional integrity of John Dewey, together with his beliefs in the efficacy of experience, have modeled the AAUP as an organization that stands up for academic freedom of thought, excellence in scholarship and service to the profession.
