Bibliographic Management software takes the place of note cards and other traditional methods of note-taking. Indiana State University's Library subsidizes free downloads of EndNote. In addition, Microsoft Word 2007 has a 'Reference' application built in.

Advantages include the ability, in some cases, of importing all the citation components you'll need directly from an online database into your EndNote file. Once you have finished your research, you can create a bibliography/works cited, reference list with a few mouse clicks. You can create an annotated bibliography as well. You can formulate your research paper as you go for eventual inclusion of in-text citations. EndNote has a lot of room for you to also take pages and pages of notes. You can clearly mark them with your own QUOTE THIS or PARAPHRASE THIS notations.

BIBLIOGRAPHIC MANAGEMENT BEST PRACTICE

Download a copy of EndNote. For each research paper, create a file/database for that particular project. As soon as you identify a potential research resource, fill out a form for that item. You can include the Library Call Number - for books -- note when the book is something you have had to request via Interlibrary Loan. You can copy/paste the 'persistent link' back to the original database entry. If you save a copy of a PDF journal article, you can link to/reference back to it from the database. Keep your files on a portable or cloud drive BUT ALSO, keep at least one back-up copy.
