Environmental justice (or injustice) focuses on environmental inequities that often result from people being exposed to greater environmental hazards based on where they live, their race, or their socioeconomic standing. In addition to learning about the foundations of environmental justice, during this seminar we will also explore recent and ongoing examples of environmental tragedies such as the Flint water crisis and lead pollution in East Chicago. This seminar will include classroom, field, and laboratory activities, including the collection of new data from nearby neighborhoods. We will also work through complicated real-world situations in the classroom to better understand the complexities of environmental justice issues.
