GH 301: Classical Education

A Classical education combines a broad, liberal arts curriculum with strong emphasis on the development of ethics and an appreciation of beauty. Our course surveys key concepts of this educational approach from its roots in ancient Greece and Rome, through its practice in the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and beyond. We’ll apply “the Trivium” (“three intersecting roads”) of the Classical approach – grammar, logics, and rhetoric – to our own study as we explore the past, present, and potential future of the application of this system of teaching and learning.

Students should anticipate a brisk reading pace. Graded course assignments will include regular readings, discussion notes preparation, reflective essays, tests, and student presentations.
