The Teacher Preparation Program at Indiana State University is recognized throughout Indiana—and the nation—for the quality of its graduates. The program was established in 1865, and is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Description:

The University offers a bachelor of arts (B.A.) and a bachelor of science (B.S.) in elementary education.

The Elementary Education program prepares students to be general classroom teachers at the elementary grade levels. This program leads to a generalist teaching license at both the primary and intermediate elementary grades (K-6).

Coursework includes professional education courses, along with Foundational Studies and additional subject matter requirements.

Coursework leading to additional licensure is offered in the following areas:

  • Early Childhood
  • English as a New Language
  • Middle School Mathematics
  • Reading
  • Special Education
  • Other approved licensed area

  • Students benefit from small classes taught by teacher-scholars who are recognized experts in their field.
     
  • The new multi-million-dollar Bayh College of Education facility features high-tech classrooms, a 475-seat auditorium, and comprehensive clinic.
     
  • Students participate in numerous semesters of field experiences, beginning with the first professional education course and continuing throughout the program. Field experiences include rural, suburban, and urban schools.
     
  • Professional development opportunities include experiences in the University's Early Childhood Education Center as well as the Professional Development Schools Program, a collaborative effort between the University and five area school districts. Students also may volunteer with the Sycamore Readers Tutoring Program as well as other community agencies.
     
  • A number of activities and organizations are available that enable students to interact with other students and professionals in education. These include the Indiana Student Education Association, the Student Council for Exceptional Children, and Kappa Delta Pi, International Honor Society in Education.
     
  • Other opportunities include the University's Honors Program and study abroad opportunities—which range from summer programs to a single semester or a full academic year in over 56 countries. In addition, the Cultural Immersion Project enables student to participate in student teaching experiences in selected countries overseas or on a Navajo Reservation domestically.

Careers:

The Elementary Education Program prepares students for teaching licensure in the elementary, primary, and intermediate school setting. Students may add additional licensure areas by completing minors in early childhood education, English as a new language, middle school math, and reading.

Our graduates find careers throughout the country—and are recognized statewide and nationwide as outstanding educators.

Special Note: According to the U.S. Department of Labor, job opportunities for teachers over the next ten years will vary from good to excellent, depending on the locality, grade level, and subject taught. Teachers who are geographically mobile and who obtain licensure in more than one subject should have a distinct advantage in finding a job.

Accreditation:

The University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

In addition, the University's Elementary Education Program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
