Careers in Accounting
Accountants are the information specialists in
business. Accountants prepare and interpret financial data needed to make
business decisions. Every company needs a business consultant, and as long
as there are companies, accountants will be in great demand.
Accounting is one of the most diverse career paths available - offering
numerous career possibilities.
A major in accounting prepares students for careers in public accounting
as Certified Public Accountants (CPA) or for careers as accountants for
companies in private industry, not-for-profit organizations, or governmental
agencies.
Certified Public Accountants provide services in
many areas:
- Consulting Services
- Information Technology Services
- Forensic Accounting
- Environmental Accounting
- International Accounting
- Tax and Financial Planning
Many graduates serve as auditors, budget officers, controllers, cost accountants, systems analysts, and tax accountants for private businesses and not-for-profit organizations.
Other accounting graduates work for government agencies such as the General Accounting Office (GAO), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and various state departments of revenue and auditing agencies.
An accounting major provides an excellent background for any career in business and finance. Numerous accounting graduates move during their careers from accounting positions into management positions such as controller, financial vice president, company president, chief executive officer, or business owner. Careers in banking and finance are viable options for accounting graduates. An accounting major also provides excellent undergraduate preparation for a career in corporate or tax law.
