Having grown up in Elgin, Illinois, a suburb west of Chicago, Vice President
Beacon attended Augustana College and earned a bachelor’s degree in
business administration in 1967, before his first position in higher
education where he managed a satellite admissions office in the Chicago
metropolitan area for a small private college in western Nebraska.
From 1974 to 1977, he was assistant director of admissions for
Indiana State University while completing degree requirements for a
master’s in College Student Personnel Services.
Over the next 33 years, he served in various administrative
positions from director of admissions and financial aid to vice provost
for enrollment management at a number of universities in the Midwest to
the East Coast.
Institutions
for which he has worked range from Eastern
Illinois University and Oklahoma State University to the University of
Nebraska, the University of Maine and Western Michigan University,
before returning to Indiana State University in 2007 as vice president
for enrollment management, marketing and communications.
Vice President Beacon has been a long time participant in recreational sports
from long distance running, racquetball and swimming to sailing, ocean
kayaking, and mountain biking.
In addition, he enjoys travel with his wife, building furniture,
and doing pen and ink drawings.
He has two grown sons who live in Colorado and Nebraska.
