SUSIE DEWEY
Susie Thurman Dewey, a retired English teacher of the Vigo County School Corporation, taught at both the middle and high school levels during her distinguished career as an educator.  Dewey received a bachelor's degree in education from Indiana State in 1940.

Between 1942 and 1945, she served as a captain in the Women's Army Corps in England, France, and Belgium during World War II, and received the Bronze Star for her service.  After the war, she earned her master's degree from the University of Chicago.

In 1948, Susie Dewey returned to Terre Haute as a teacher at Gerstmeyer High School, where she taught until 1963.  From 1963 to 1972 she held the position of administrative English consultant to the Vigo County School Corporation.  She finished her teaching career at Woodrow Wilson Middle School in Terre Haute, retiring in 1984.

Dewey has served Indiana State University as a member of the ISU Distinguished Alumni Awards Committee and the ISU Friends of the Library Committee.  She also was secretary of the Friends of Music Committee at Indiana University for 40 years.

Her proposal to Indiana State for the creation of the Dewey Institute for Learning in Retirement (named for noted educator John Dewey) bore fruit in 1997.  Since then the Institute, in conjunction with ISU's Office of General Education, has offered lectures and courses on history, jazz, the Internet, and other topics of interest to older adults in Vigo County.

Dewey's other community service includes Trees, Inc., the Swope Art Museum, the Vigo County Historical Society, and the Indiana State Teachers Retirement Association.  She also is a life member of the ISU Alumni Association, the Indiana State Teachers Association, and the National Education Association.

Susie Dewey resides in Terre Haute.  She was a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2001.

PAUL LO

A native of Taiwan, Paul Lo is a 1970 graduate of Indiana State University with a master of business administration degree.  Today he is an internationally recognized banker and financier residing in Hong Kong.

Lo is a leading force and outspoken supporter of economic growth and international trade between China and the United States.  He is well on his way to making this philosophy a reality in his position as chairman of the Far East National Bank, a position he has held since 1997.  Lo is also chairman of Bank SinoPac of Taiwan and president and chief executive officer of SinoPac Holdings.

Prior to his current appointments, Lo held positions for 17 years with Citibank in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.  In 1986, he moved to Hong Kong to start his own finance company, investing in businesses in China ranging from shoes to petrochemicals.  With the opening of Taiwan's banking system to private banks in 1992, Lo formed Bank SinoPac by raising $400 million in capital.  In the years since its founding, SinoPac has grown rapidly despite the financial crisis other Asian banks faced in the 1990s.  Today, SinoPac has 44 branches throughout Taiwan, one in California, Two offices in Hong Kong and Vietnam, a United States subsidiary bank, and a host of financial affiliates including securities and leasing companies.

Lo has been featured in several international, Asian, and American financial magazines including Business Week, Euromoney, The Banker, Global Finance, and The Asset.  In 1999 he was selected as one of Business Week's 50 Stars of Asia.

Paul Lo received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2003.

Thomas now has worldwide responsibility as director of Global Services for IBM, a leader in providing information technology services.  In this position, he provides executive leadership to North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Asia-Pacific areas.
