Cynthia Rose Berry Powers

2005 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient

The president of Century 21 Powers Realty, Inc., Cynthia Rose Berry Powers earned a bachelor's and master of science degrees from Indiana State University in 1969 and 1970, respectively.

Her 34-year real estate career has been dedicated to ensuring open and integrated housing opportunities in north Indiana. As part of this effort, she and six other Gary-area realtors worked to provide African American realtors full access to the Multiple Listing Service organization. Later she s would serve as a board member and president of the northwest Indiana Multiple Listing Services and Board of realtors. She w also served a first vice president Indiana Association of Realtors.

Powers is active in her community and serves on the boards of the Trade Winds Rehabilitation Center, Bank Calumet Inc. the Discovery Alliance, Northwest Indiana Quality of Life Council, Drifting Dunes Girl Scout Council, Willowglen Academy and Hospice of the Calumet Area.

She also is dedicated to mentoring and motivating young people and coordinated a mentoring program for the Northern Indiana chapter of Links, Inc., an organization devoted to assisting at-risk students at a local middle school. She also co-chaired a two-year fund-raising campaign that netted $4 million for the construction of a new YWCA in Gary. For over 10 years she has coordinated a 30- to 40-member youth choir at her church

While a student at Indiana State, Cynthia was a founding member of Delta Sigma theta sorority
