Post-Professional Athletic Training Program - Graduate Education

Our aim is that each graduate of the program will excel within our points of distinctiveness at the time of graduation. The points of distinction are threaded throughout the courses in the curriculum and have associated measureable outcomes linked to course assignments and activities.  ISU’s Points of Distinctiveness are:

1.  Leadership and Administration

2.  Evidence Based Practice

3.  Athletic Training Educator

Clinical and didactic teaching are woven throughout the curriculum beginning with the AT Educator course (ATTR 625).  This provides students the framework for clinical supervision, but also focuses on teaching outside the traditional sense.  Students are encouraged to apply each strategy to their peers, patients, coaches, and supervisors to achieve their necessary outcomes. Once students have established a framework, they begin the supervision of undergraduate students, while being mentored by supervisors and more experienced clinical instructors.

In recent years we have incorporated the clinical education courses, which provide a public forum for group thinking.  Discussion and presentation of challenges in the clinical setting allows students to feel as if they are not alone and provides varied perspectives on solving problems.

We have a structured research project/thesis process including contracts between faculty and students that creates shared responsibility and provides accountability criteria for all.  In addition to projects and theses, students choose to engage in additional research.  Students are publishing work from course assignments including position pieces and case reports.  We believe this commitment to research is a sign that students appreciate the principles of scholarship and life-long learning.
