Features
The outstanding Indiana State College Arena and Physical Education Building was completed and put into use in February, 1962, with official dedication of the building scheduled for December 1, 1962. This structure has a huge gymnasium area which can be used as three gyms, or can be converted into one large gym floor for basketball games and other events. The gym is serviced by 30-row, mechanized bleachers which provide seating for over 5500 persons. The bleachers can be folded to occupy only five or six feet of floor space, and when extended stretch out 60 feet. The building also houses a gymnastics room, wrestling room, several dressing rooms, a trainer's room, Olympic-type pool with 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards, a suite of faculty offices, and three classrooms. The lower level of the building, directly under the gym floor, is a dirt-covered area providing facilities for indoor track practice, baseball batting and pitching cages, and a golf practice cage. Bar bells and other body conditioning equipment are also located on this lower level.
The building is servicing over 500 physical education majors plus over 2000 men in service classes and intramurals and the intercollegiate athletic program. The area is also used for college registration, large college dances, and approved community affairs.
The Addition
The Health Professions and Physical Education addition will provide expanded educational and recreational space to the present facility. Included will be a multipurpose area designed to accommodate six basketball courts, 20 badminton courts, six indoor tennis courts, a jogging track, eight volleyball courts, and 10 racquetball / handball courts.
The addition will add 121,000 square feet to the present facility and will allow for the consolidation of offices and classrooms throughout various campus facilities.
Other features of the addition include laboratories for health and safety as well as for physical education class.
In 2003, a climbing wall was dedicated in the North gym of the arena.
