Fire completely destroyed the Indiana State Normal School. Total loss of the fire was estimated at $225,000. There was no insurance coverage. The City of Terre Haute promptly offered $50,000 to begin rebuilding Y.W.C.A. was organized on campus.
The General Assembly appropriated $100,000 to rebuild the Indiana State Normal School building The School was reopened in September of 1889

Arrangements were mad with Indiana University and with Wabash College whereby graduates of the State Normal School, who completed the English and Latin course, would be admitted to the Junior class of these institutions, and upon completion of two years work, would receive Bachelor of Science degree
