September, Plans are announced to discontinue the ISU Laboratory School High School. The High School will be phased out by 1982, leaving only grades K-8 in the University School

February 15-16, The first annual Blumberg Conference on Mental Retardation is held at Indiana State University. The conferences are funded through the bequest of Fannie Blumberg
April, The ISU gymnastics team led by All-American Kurt Thomas wins the NCAA National Championship. The Title is shared with Oklahoma
August, Statesman Tower West was officially dedicated as the new School of Education. The School of Education moved from Stalker Hall during the summer
October, The State Budget Committee approves ^60,000 for construction of a new Theatre

The ISU basketball team led by All-American Larry Bird is runner-up to Michigan State University in the NCAA Championship Tournament held in Salt Lake City, Utah The Bowman Building was remodeled as the new home for the Department of Theatre
March, The School of Technology was reorganized
July, The Board of Trustees authorized $890,000 for construction on Statesman Tower East. The dormitory is to be refurbished to house the School of Business
October, Plans were announced for a 6.7 million dollar building addition and remodeling of the School of Technology
