Two studio contact hours are required for every credit hour.

101 Art Fundamentals:

Beginning 'Drawing--3 hours. Lecture/laboratory. Fundamentals of drawing.

102 Art Fundamentals:

Two-Dimensional Design and Color--3 hours. Lecture/laboratory. Fundamentals and theory of two-dimensional design and color. Exploration of a variety of art-media, including the computer.

104 Art Fundamentals:

Three-Dimensional Design--3 hours. Lecture/laboratory. Fundamentals of three-dimensional design and theory. Prerequisites: 101, or consent of instructor.

210 Ceramics I:

3 hours. An introductory exploration of the three-dimensional container form, utilizing various ceramics approaches. Prerequisites: 101, 102, and 104; or consent of instructor.

215 Drawing I:

3 hours. A course based on observation of natural, mechanical, and human forms, and their representation through various drawing materials. Emphasis on acquiring basic drawing skills. Prerequisites: 101, 102, and 104; or consent of instructor.

230 Painting I:

3 hours. A study of compositional structures and how they relate to basic picture building. Prerequisites: 101, 102, and 104; or consent of instructor.

235 Photography I:

3 hours. An introductory course in the fundamentals of darkroom work and digital imagery, and the use of the photographic medium as a means of visual expression. Prerequisites: 101, 102, and 104; or consent of instructor.

240 Printmaking I:

3 hours. Introduction to basic printmaking techniques: relief, calligraphy, and intaglio. Prerequisites: 101, 102, and 104; or consent of instructor.

245 Sculpture I:

3 hours. An introduction to three-dimensional form, space, and content. Emphasis on construction, fabrication, and assemblage. Prerequisites: 101, 102, and 104; or consent of instructor.

255 Sculpture--Wood/Studio Furniture I:

3 hours. An introduction to three-dimensional form, space, and content. Care and function of hand tools, machinery, and basic woodworking techniques, with emphasis on woods, adhesives, fabrication, and design of furniture and sculpture. Individualized projects stressed. Prerequisites: 101, 102, and 104; or consent of instructor.

311 Ceramics II:

3 hours. A continuing exploration of the three-dimensional form with clay and glazes as the primary media. May be repeated once for credit. Prerequisites: 210 and 215, or consent of instructor.

 

316 Drawing II:

3 hours. A second course based on observation of natural, mechanical, and human forms, and their representation through various drawing materials. Emphasis on acquiring advanced drawing skills. May be repeated once for credit. Prerequisite: 215 or consent of instructor.

317 Drawing III:

3 hours. A visual investigation into various traditional and non-traditional ideas, techniques, and materials in drawing. Emphasis on the development of the personal iconography of the student. Prerequisite: 316 or consent of instructor.

331 Painting II:

3 hours. Study in painting media and the development of a personal iconography. Prerequisites: 215 and 230, or consent of instructor.

 

336 Photography II:

3 hours. An investigation into photography as a method of exploring variations through digital imagery and darkroom manipulations. Emphasis on quality print control and advanced camera use. May be repeated once for credit. Prerequisites: 215 and 235, or consent of instructor.

 

 

341 Printmaking II:

3 hours. Intaglio and mixed media print processes with an introduction to lithography. May be repeated once for credit. Prerequisites: 215 and 240, or consent of instructor.

 

346 Sculpture II:

3 hours. Continuation of 245 with enriched theory and practice. Fundamentals and practice of construction, fabrication, assemblage with mixed media, and welded steel construction. May be repeated once for credit. Prerequisites: 215 and 245, or consent of instructor.

356 Sculpture--Wood/Studio Furniture II:

3 hours. Continuation of 255 with enriched theory and practice. Fabrication, experimental problems, and processes are encouraged. May be repeated once for credit. Prerequisites: 215 and 255, or consent of instructor.

357 Sculpture--Wood/Studio Furniture III:

3 hours. Individual projects, with emphasis on research, design, and advanced project techniques and processes in wood media. Prerequisite: 356 or consent of instructor.

400 Art Workshop:

1-9 hours. Specialized training in some form of the visual arts.

410 Ceramics IV:

3 hours. An advanced study of three-dimensional form and ceramic techniques, emphasizing a working knowledge of kiln functions and operations. Prerequisite: 312 or consent of instructor.

413 Kiln Design:

3 hours. Principles of kiln design and construction of one kiln to meet the needs of various disciplines.

414 Glaze Calculation:

3 hours. The study of clays and glaze materials and the formulation of clay bodies and ceramic glazes.

415 Drawing IV:

3 hours. A visual investigation into various traditional and non-traditional ideas, techniques, and materials in drawing. Emphasis on the development of the personal iconography of the student. Prerequisite: 317 or consent of instructor.

430 Painting IV:

3 hours. Advanced painting, embracing extensive experiments in new aesthetic concepts. Prerequisites: 215 and 230, or consent of instructor.

435 Photography IV:

3 hours. Advanced exploration of photographic media as a means of expression, including some exploration into mixed-media; primarily individual projects. Prerequisite: 337 or consent of instructor.

437 Special Problems in Photography:

1-6 hours. Additional laboratory experience in photography, with some emphasis on individual research. Prerequisite: 435 or consent of instructor.

440 Printmaking IV:

3 hours. Stone and metal plate lithography. Prerequisite: 342 or consent of instructor.

441 Printmaking V:

3 hours. Advanced problems in print media with special emphasis on color and photo processes. May be repeated once for credit. Prerequisite: 440 or consent of instructor.

442 Special Problems in Printmaking:

1-6 hours. Individual experimentation in intaglio and/or lithography. Prerequisite: 440 or consent of instructor.

443 Screenprinting:

3 hours. Stencil process printmaking, utilizing tusche/glue, cut film, and photostencil techniques.

445 Sculpture IV:

3 hours. Advanced exploration of sculptural concepts. Emphasis on metal construction with mixed media. Prerequisite: 347 or consent of instructor.

446 Sculpture V:

3 hours. Continuation of 445. Emphasis on individual projects. May be repeated once for credit. Prerequisite: 445 or consent of instructor.

447 Special Problems in Sculpture:

1-6 hours. Individual projects, with emphasis on form, concept, and integration of multimedia. Prerequisite: 445 or consent of instructor.

450 Alternative Art Forms:

3 hours. This studio course challenges the conventional idea of art as discrete, autonomous objects displayed independent of their physical contexts in traditional gallery settings. A variety of contemporary non-traditional forms will be presented in each offering. Course may be repeated twice for credit. Studio class for majors, non-majors. Offerings to include: Performance Art 450A, Installation Art 450B, and other topics to be determined. Prerequisites: 101, 102, and 104; or consent of instructor.

455 Sculpture--Wood/Studio Furniture IV:

3 hours. Advanced exploration of sculptural concepts. Advanced techniques and methods in wood media designed to give the student maximum latitude and flexibility in individual expression. Production and multiples in design are encouraged. Prerequisite: 357 or consent of instructor.

456 Sculpture--Wood/Studio Furniture V:

3 hours. Continuation of 455. Maximum emphasis relating to the student's own experiences, processes, and experimentation. May be repeated once for credit. Prerequisite: 455 or consent of instructor.

457 Special Problems in Sculpture--Wood/Studio Furniture:

1-6 hours. Individual projects, with emphasis on the student's own experiences, processes, and experimentation. Prerequisite: 455 or consent of instructor.
