Creative & Performing Arts (C & PA) Scholarships

Description: The C & PA scholarships were established and based in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Open to: Students who have been admitted unconditionally to ISU, majoring in Art, who meet minimum scholarship requirements of 3.00 high school GPA/upper 25% of class, and are not recipients of any other matriculation awards (academic, alumni, or Presidents scholarship). Scholarships may be renewed for a maximum total of eight semesters of on-campus undergraduate education.

Award Amount: $2,000 per year

Indiana Artist-Craftsmen/Talbot Street Art Fair Scholarship

Description: The Indiana Artist-Craftsmen/Talbot Street Art Fair Scholarship was established in 1988 by Indiana Artist-Craftsmen, Inc. and Talbot Street Art Fair to honor Georgetta Snell Lucas and Joan King Kisner for their many years of service to both organizations. Georgetta Snell Lucas, President of Indiana Artist Craftsmen, earned the bachelors degree in 1942 from Indiana State University. Joan King Kisner, Chairperson of the Talbot Street Art Fair, also received the bachelors degree in 1960 from Indiana State as well as a masters degree in 1967.

Open to: Undergraduate art student

Selection Criteria: Deserving undergraduate student (s) demonstrating talent and proficiency, majoring in Art, to further their art education at Indiana State University.

Award Amount: $350.00

Number of Awards Given Annually: One award, made at the Juried Student Show in spring.

How to Apply: There is no formal application. Based on faculty selection, the Recruitment/Scholarship Committee coordinates and makes recommendations to the Chairperson of the Department.

Elmer J. Porter Scholarship

Description: Family and friends of Elmer J. Porter established an endowed scholarship fund to be administered by the Indiana State University Foundation, for the benefit of a student or students, enrolled in Indiana State University. Elmer J. Porter was a professor of Art at Indiana State University from 1946 to 1973. He served as Chairman of the Department of Art at Indiana State University for many years. He earned his undergraduate degree from Art Institute of Chicago and completed his masters degree from Ohio State University in 1938. The scholarship was established by his family and friends after his death in 1996.

Open to: Undergraduate and graduate students of the Department of Art

Selection Criteria: Deserving students enrolled in the Department of Art at ISU

Award Amount: $675

Number of Awards Given Annually: Total of two awards of $337.50 each: one in fall, and one in spring, made at the Juried Student Show in spring.

How to Apply: There is no formal application. Based on selection by cognitive faculty, the Recruitment/Scholarship Committee coordinates and makes recommendations to the Chairperson of the Department.

Jonathan K. Baker Memorial Prize

Description: The Jonathan K. Baker Memorial Prize was established by his family following his death in April of 1997. In 1989 Jon won the Junior Honors Art Award at Indiana University. He received his bachelor of fine arts degree from Indiana University in 1992 and was preparing to attain his masters degree. In honor of Jonathans talent, this prize will be given annually to an undergraduate art student for a black and white drawing submitted to the Juried Student Art Show in spring.

Open to: Undergraduate art student

Selection Criteria: Award shall be given to an Indiana State university undergraduate art student for a black and white drawing or print submitted to the juried student art show each spring.

Award Amount: $300.00 in check presented to recipient at Juried Student Art Show.

Mark S. Hannig Scholarship in Art

Description: The Mark S. Hannig Scholarship in Art was established in 1998 through a generous contribution from Shelton and Muriel Hannig to honor the memory of their son, Mark S. Hannig. Always a good student, Mark excelled in the sciences and went on to graduate from MIT as an Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineer. As a licensed pilot for single engine aircraft he did agricultural flying and was a Bush Pilot in the wilderness of Alaska while spending his summers in Vermont as an instructor in soaring. With over two thousand hours, including twin-engine aircraft, he continued in Private Aviation. Mark died in an aircraft accident in 1978, at the age of 24, in the mountains of Washington State while working for the U.S. Government. This scholarship is to assist other young people is a memorial to Marks gentle personality, his calm manner and his analytical mind.

Award Amount: $1,000.00

Violet Helen Rich Scholarship

Description: The Violet Helen Rich Scholarship was established in 1986 in memory of Mrs. Rich by her husband, Theodore Rich. She received an art scholarship from the Rhode Island School of Design when she was 12. Throughout her life she expressed her creativity in both watercolor and oils for the joy of her family, friends and society. Her artistic talent won her many awards throughout the region. She moved to Terre Haute in 1943 and held her first exhibit in the area in 1944. It is hoped that her 61 years of sensitivity and creativity exhibited in the beauty of her watercolors and oils will be an inspiration for many young artists who will receive the endowed scholarship at Indiana State University to develop their own talents.

Open to: Undergraduate art student with painting emphasis and at least junior status.

Selection Criteria: The recipient shall be an art student at Indiana State University with a declared emphasis in painting, both oils and watercolors. The recipient shall be in good academic standing at the University and shall have achieved at least junior status at the University. The scholarship can be renewed for a second year, if recommended by the committee.

Award Amount: $1,500.00

Number of Awards Given Annually: One or two, the total not to exceed the award amount of $1,500.

How to Apply: There is no formal application. Based on selection by faculty in Painting, the Recruitment/Scholarship Committee coordinates and makes recommendations to the Chairperson of the Department. Award is made at the Juried Student Show in spring.

Hildegard Pang Art and Anthropology Scholarship

Description: The Hildegard Pang Art and Anthropology Scholarship was established through a generous bequest in the will of Dr. Pang following her death in August of 1999. She was a professor of anthropology for many years in the Department of Geography, Geology, and Anthropology at Indiana State University. Dr Pang also had a great appreciation for art and it was her desire to provide scholarship assistance for worthy ISU students pursuing a major in art or art history and anthropology.

Open to: Undergraduate full time Art or Art History students of ISU.

Selection Criteria: Consideration for this scholarship shall be given to Indiana State University students who meet the following criteria: (1) are full-time, undergraduate students pursuing a major in Art or Art History; (2) possess a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2; and (3) manifest promise of leadership within their chosen discipline.

Award Amount: $400.00

Kraig A. Gibbons Memorial Award for Sculpture

Description: Kraig Alan Gibbons graduated from Indiana State University in 1981 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. He also completed course work towards a graduate degree from 1981 to 1982. Kraig was one of few students who took sculpture classes at ISU during his junior and senior years of high school. Working as a freelance artist from 1985 until 1993 he designed over 78 floats for the Tournament of Roses Parade, winning 15 banners including Sweepstakes in 1990 and 1993. He also designed award winning entries for the Indianapolis 500 Parade, Fiesta Bowl Parade, 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, Coca Cola 100th Anniversary Parade, Atlanta, Ga., and Presidents Bush and Clintons Inaugural Parades. His works of fine art were accepted in 33 juried exhibitions, and in addition, a solo exhibition was held at the Sheldon Swope Art Museum, Terre Haute, Indiana. Kraig always encouraged individuals, young and old, to be aware of art in the world around them and to develop their own creativity and art appreciation.

Open to: Undergraduate and graduate students of the Department of Art enrolled in sculpture

Selection Criteria: Sculpture student enrolled full time in the ISU Department of Art.

Award Amount: $300.00 in check presented at the Juried Student Show.

Number of Awards Given Annually: 1

How to Apply: The recipient shall be selected based on work submitted for the ISU Juried Student Exhibition, and selected by faculty in Sculpture area.

Marian J. Frutiger Memorial Scholarship in Art

Description: This scholarship came to the Department of Art from the estate of Marian Frutiger. Born in Staunton, Indiana, she attended ISU and graduated in 1930 with a degree in Art and Social Studies. In 1954, she married Gustave Frutiger in Houston, Texas where, for many years, she taught art in the public schools.

Open to: Full-time undergraduate and graduate students of the Department of Art, Indiana State University.

Selection Criteria: Recipients must be full-time undergraduate or graduate art students. Undergraduate students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and graduate students must have a minimum 3.5 GPA.

Award Amount: $2,300

Number of Awards Given Annually: Multiple, not to exceed the award amount of $2,300.

How to Apply: There is no formal application. Based on selection by the faculty, the Recruitment/Scholarship Committee coordinates and makes recommendations to the Chairperson of the Department. Award is made at the Juried Student Show in spring.

Friends of Art Scholarship

Description: This scholarship was established with the funds that were donated to the Department of Art by its generous alumni and friends.

Open to: Full-time undergraduate students of the Department of Art, Indiana State University.

Selection Criteria: Outstanding full-time studio art/graphic design/art education/art history undergraduate major in the Department of Art, Indiana State University.

Award Amount: $500

Number of Awards Given Annually: 1

Jack E. and Virginia Carpenter Bradbury Fine Arts Scholarship

Description: Established in 1999 by Cheryl and C. Thomas Steiner to honor Cheryls parents, Jack and Virginia Bradbury. Dr. and Mrs. Bradbury are both alumni of Indiana State University.

The scholarship, which was established to assist needy students in the arts, is based in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Open to: Sophomore or junior art student and Indiana resident, with a minimum GPA of 2.5 in his or her major, and must have a financial need. A FAFSA must be on file with Financial Aid.

Selection Criteria: Award is made by a selection committee named by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and includes representative of the Departments of Art, Music, and Theater.

Award Amount: $500

Number of Awards Given Annually: 1

How to Apply: Based on recommendations made by the faculty, the Chairperson of the Department of Art submits name of eligible candidate to the Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in spring.
