SEPTEMBER 26 - OCTOBER 26ARTIST'S RECEPTION: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4, 5:00-7:00 P.M.ARTIST'S LECTURE: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4, 5:30 P.M.POETRY AS PAINTING: VERA KLEMENTThe 2007-2008 Williamson Memorial Artist-in-Residence will be painter Vera Klement of Chicago, Illinois. She was born in 1929 in Danzig, now Gdansk, Poland, and studied at the Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture. Her many solo exhibitions include the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Fassbender Gallery, the Chicago Cultural Center, and most recently Alfedena Gallery in Chicago. She has received grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. Her paintings, a mix of figuration and abstraction, are rich in poetic effect. Often presented in diptychs, they pair floating symbols and human forms with enormous abstract canvases that roll with emotion. Dore Ashton writes of her work, "It is rare to find a painter who has followed so affectionately, so cogently an inherent feeling for continuity; who can take a tradition (the near tradition of the Abstract Expressionists) and work out of it into fresh territory. Klement has developed a clear voice full of resonances." It has allowed me to focus on perception as a primary consideration in my visual language.” Her research interests involve exploring perception relative to the landscape and crossing over into the sciences. She has won numerous awards including an Illinois Arts Council Grant and has exhibited nationally and internationally. Her most recent project titled “Deception Pass” is based on a marine navigation channel in Washington State and is made possible by the support of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in their Pacific Hydrographic Branch in Seattle, WA. BEAM, CURATOR, CASTELLANI ART MUSEUM: 5:30 PM THE EXQUISITE CORPSE IN GLASS: FIGURATIVE FLAMEWORKERS PLAY A SURREALIST GAME
The Exquisite Corpse in Glass: Figurative Flameworkers Play a Surrealist Game welcomes eleven internationally known glass artists that re-examine Cadavre Exquis (Exquisite Corpse) in a series of twenty seductive glass figures, roughly 10 inches each. The exhibition takes on a communal approach based on the history of the Surrealist Game invented in 1925. Each flame-worked, sculpted glass figure is composed of three parts, a head, torso, and legs. Drawn at random prior to the installation, one figures head will be assembled with a different torso, and yet another's legs, resulting in 6840 potential sculptural variations. The Exquisite Corpse in Glass ends up a completely new and spectacular display each time is installed. The participating artists are: Karen Buhler, Shane Fero, Caitlin Beaven, Marshall Hyde, Carmen Lozar, Robert Mickelsen, Pat Owens, Emilio Santini, Loren Stump, Milon Townsend, and Bernd Weinmayer. Jack Gates, Faculty Emeritus from the Department of Art, will randomly select each of the twenty glass figures in a drawing, Tuesday, March 4 at 10:00am in the University Art Gallery. All are welcome to attend. The exhibition is organized and traveled by the Castellani Art Museum at Niagara University, and is curated by Marshall Hyde, Independent Curator, and Michael J. Beam, Curator of Exhibitions at the Castellani Art Museum.
