Information Design & End-user Computing (IDEC) CurriculumIDEC
majors fulfill the same core requirements as all other College of Business
majors. In the IDEC major, students learn a variety of information
technologies and applications of information design and management
principles to increase the usefulness and accessibility of an
organization’s information resources for a variety of users and purposes.
Students will combine business knowledge and creative talents to help
businesses be more effective. You can earn a double major–IDEC &
Business Administration–with no extra credit hours! Please

Required Courses: BEIT 307, Information and Technology in Organizations The course provides an overview of information and technology in organizations with a focus on the application of technologies and information design principles to support end-user tasks. The material in the course examines the entire process of information design, exchange, storage, retrieval, and distribution in organizations and its enabling technologies. The emphasis is on providing accessible and usable information to support user productivity. Prerequisite: BUS 170. BEIT 317, Document Planning and Design Focuses on planning, design, layout, creation, and evaluation of various organizational documents. Students will learn hardware requirements and appropriate software applications to facilitate document creation. BEIT 320, Spreadsheet and Database Applications Provides concepts basic to the integration of microcomputers into the information processing activities of a business organization. Major emphasis is on using spreadsheet and database software as tools for decision making and problem solving. BEIT 337, Managing Information Resources and Staff Emphasizes effective management of information resources and the importance of understanding end-users’ information needs. This course expands upon passive end-user support to include identifying, planning, organizing, and optimizing information resources to enhance productivity of knowledge workers, and contribute to overall organizational strategy. Development and management of end-user support staff is included also. Prerequisite: Business 330 or 371 or consent of Department Chairperson. MIS 300 - Business Systems Analysis An overview of the system development process with emphasis on logical model development. The course includes tools and techniques for describing information-based business problems, processes, data flows, data structures, and program specifications. Problem solving and communication skills used by the information technology specialist are also covered. Prerequisite: completion of the Level I information technology major core courses. Directed Electives Nine (9) hours of directed electives from the following areas: ACCT, BEIT, INS, MGT, MIS, FIN, MKTG, QDS, or ECON. Non-business Electives Eight (8) hours of non-business electives must be completed. Econ 201 (3 hrs.) plus five (5) additional hours. |
