SYCAMORES POWER THEIR WAY TO 5-3 VICTORY OVER INDIANA

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State downed the Indiana Hoosiers at chilly Sycamore Field this afternoon (March 6) when freshman Nick Ciolli belted his second home run of the season over the left field fence to push the Sycamores out to a quick 4-0 lead which eventually led to a 5-3 victory over the Big Ten Hoosiers. ISU improves to 5-2 on the season while IU drops to 3-4.

Ciolli provided all of the offense that Indiana State would need on the day in the bottom of the first when he belted his second home run of the season and the first grand slam of young career. He drove home what proved to be the game-winning blow as his former teammate from Terre Haute North Vigo High School, Josh Phegley, looked on as the Hoosier catcher.

With ISU in front 4-0, starter Chad Dawson was able to cruise through his five innings of work. Dawson earned his first victory of the season, allowing just four Hoosier hits and a pair of runs. He struck out four batters and walked four.

Senior Adam Lindsay worked the final four innings for the Sycamores, giving up just three Hoosier hits and a run to earn his second save of the season. He struck out a pair of batters during his stint on the mound.

With Indiana State clinging to a slim 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, Ryan Bond reached on a one out fielder’s choice and then stole second base. Josh Abercrombie belted a hard single to center field, and it appeared that Bond would not be able to score. But the Indiana centerfielder bobbled the ball just enough that Bond was able to regain his speed and score to make it 5-3.

ISU’s scheduled game on Wednesday at Western Illinois has been cancelled due to poor field conditions in Macomb, Ill.

The Sycamores will take to the field next on Friday afternoon, March 9, when they travel to Louisville, Ky. to face the Cardinals at 3:00 p.m. (ET). ISU will take on Kent State, March 10 at 11:00 a.m., and will battle California on March 11 beginning at 10:00 a.m. All games will be played at the University of Louisville.
