SYCAMORES FALL TO AUSTIN PEAY AFTER RACING TO HOT START

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn – The Indiana State Sycamore baseball team got off to a great start against the host Austin Peay Governors, posting four first inning runs, but APSU took advantage of five Sycamore errors the rest of the way to win, 11-5. ISU falls to 5-6 on the season while APSU improved to 7-6.

The Indiana State Sycamores got off to a great start in the top of the first inning against the host Governors by scoring four runs on just a pair of hits. Ryan Strausborger led off the frame by being hit by a pitch. Josh Abercrombie attempted a sacrifice bunt, and the fielder elected to attempt to get Strausborger, but his throw down was late giving ISU runners at first and second with no outs.

Chris Schmidt loaded the bases with a perfect bunt that trickled into no man’s land in the middle of the field. Casey Martin struck out, but the final pitch of his at-bat went to the backstop allowing Strausborger to score and make the score 1-0. Ryan Bond reached on an error to plate Abercrombie for the 2-0 advantage, and then Schmidt advanced on a wild pickoff play to score, making it 3-0 Sycamores.

Paul Strack’s sacrifice fly plated Bond for the 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the frame.

Austin Peay scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to make it 4-2, but Martin homered to deep left field in the top of third for a 5-2 Indiana State lead.

APSU knotted the score in the bottom of the fourth with three runs to make it 6-5. The Governors scored one run each in the fifth and seventh innings to make it 8-5. They blew the game wide open in the bottom of the eighth, posting run runs off of Josh Varno for the 11-5 lead.

Errors plagued ISU on the day, committing five miscues, which led to four unearned Austin Peay runs.

Indiana State starter Chad Dawson took the loss for Indiana State, dropping him to 1-1 on the season. Dawson went five innings in the game, allowing 10 hits and seven runs, four of which were earned. He struck out six batters on the day.

Varno tossed two and two thirds innings, allowing three hits and four runs, three of which were earned. Nathan Inman came on to finish the bottom of the eighth, getting out the only batter he faced.

Austin Peay’s Matt Bullock threw six innings to earn his first victory of the season by allowing five hits and five runs, four of which were earned.

Indiana State and Austin Peay return to action on Wednesday, March 14 at Sycamore Field with a single game. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. (ET).
