SYCAMORES GET OFF TO ANOTHER HOT START, FALL TO AUSTIN PEAY

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – One day after racing out to a quick 4-0 lead at Austin Peay, the Sycamores bolted out to a 3-0 advantage in the first inning against the Governors before a spectacular defensive play ended an Indiana State rally in the ninth and ASPU walked away with an 8-7 victory as well as a season series sweep. ISU falls to 5-7, while the Governors at 8-6.

With APSU holding on to a tenuous 8-7 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, Ryan Bond led off with a single to centerfield. Bond moved into scoring position with a stolen base. Marcus Artner followed that with a solid single back up the middle, but Bond only advanced to third. With runners and second and third, Brett Siegmund was intentionally walked to load the bases with no one out.

Paul Strack struck out, and then Sean Osborne lined out on a sharply hit ball to APSU first baseman Ryne Mantooth. Mantooth was able to end the game by doubling off Siegmund, who was taking a lead off first.

APSU took the lead in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by J.B. Gilbert.

ISU came from down 7-5 in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by Josh Abercrombie and a double play by Chris Schmidt that scored Strausborger to knot the score at 7.

A Nick Coilli single with the bases load in the bottom of the first gave ISU an early 1-0 lead. Abercrombie scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 and Schmidt then scored on a ground out by Bond for the quick 3-0 lead.

The Governors scored twice in the second to make it 3-2, before ISU tacked on two more with a pair of groundouts in the bottom half of the frame for the 5-2 lead.

APSU scored five times (three unearned) in the top of the fourth for the 7-5 advantage.

Skyler Pearson got the nod for the Sycamores and allowed eight hits and four runs in three and two thirds innings with five strikeouts. Andrew Strange allowed a trio of unearned runs in the middle innings, while ISU’s Ryan Tatusko kept ISU close with an inning of work.

Ryan Hayes worked two thirds of an inning while Adam Lindsay was saddled with the loss, pitching the final one and a third innings with two hits and an unearned run. Lindsay falls to 0-1 on the season.

Abercrombie went 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI and a run scored. Schmidt was 2-of-5 with while Marcus Artner was 2-of-5 at the plate. Brett Siegmund finished the game 2-of-4. In the lead-off spot, Ryan Strausborger was 1-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored.

Indiana State stays in the Ohio Valley Conference this weekend with a three-game set at Murray State. There is a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch set for 2:00 p.m. (ET), while Sunday’s single-game is also a 2:00 p.m. start.
