SYCAMORES SWEEP MURRAY STATE AS SKYLER PEARSON EARNS FIRST COLLEGIATE VICTORY

MURRAY, Ky. – After taking 2-of-3 in their two prior weekend non-conference series, the Sycamores finally notched a sweep with its 12-4 victory today (March 18) over Murray State. Indiana State leaves town with an 8-7 record while the ‘Breds fall to 3-14.

In the three-game series versus the ‘Breds, ISU scored 37 runs on 44 hits to win by an average margin of just over 10 runs per game.        

ISU put four runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning to jump out to an early advantage. Brett Siegmund led off the frame with a double to left field and scored one batter later when Casey Martin singled through the right side for the 1-0 lead. After Martin stole second base, he scored on a single to right field to make it 2-0.

Nick Coilli reached on a fielder’s choice and moved to second on a throwing error. After stealing third, he scored when Ryan Bond reached on an infield hit for the 3-0 advantage. Bond moved to third on a single by Sean Osborne and scored when Ryan Strausborger laid down a perfect bunt to first base for the 4-0 lead.

Indiana State tacked on another run to its lead in the sixth when Bond reached on a two-out error. He moved to third on an error and a wild pitch and scored when Osborne singled to make it 5-0.

The ‘Breds made it 5-1 in the sixth, and then scored twice more in the seventh to inch closer at 5-3. Adam Lindsay had to take the mound in the seventh with one out and work out of a bases loaded jam to preserve the lead.

In the ninth, the Sycamores tacked on seven more runs with an RBI single by Josh Abercrombie who scored Osborne from second for the 6-3 lead. Dave Brumagin’s fly ball to right field was booted with two outs and the bases loaded to score a pair of runs for the 8-3 advantage. ISU made it 10-3 on a two run double by Coilli to secure the victory. Bond drove Ciolli home for the 11-3 margin on a single through the right side. Strausborger singled up the middle to score Osborne for the 12-3 win.

Skyler Pearson started the game and performed well, pitching five and two thirds of an inning, allowing just a pair of hits and one run to earn his first career collegiate victory in his third start. Pearson struck out four batters in the game. After relievers Josh Varno and Andrew Strange allowed one run each, Lindsay slammed the door for the final two and third innings while Dawson finished off the bottom of the ninth.

Offensively, ISU was paced by Brumagin who was 4-of-5 on the day with an RBI and a run scored. Ryan Bond record three hits on five at-bats with a pair of RBI and three runs scored. Coilli drove in a pair as well on his one hit during the day. Sean Osborne was 2-of-2 with a run scored as well as an RBI.

Indiana State returns to action on Tuesday, March 20 when they travel to Miami (Ohio) for its final tune-up before opening Missouri Valley Conference play next weekend at Wichita State.
