INDIANA STATE DROPS MVC OPENER AT WICHITA STATE
WICHITA, Kan.
– Indiana State entered its Missouri Valley Conference
opener at Wichita State riding a four-game winning steak, but
fell to the nation’s No. 11 team, the Shockers, by a score of 7-1
at Eck Stadium, The Home of Tyler Field. ISU falls to 9-8, 0-1
MVC while WSU is now 19-5, 1-0 MVC.
Senior Ryan Hayes took
the loss for the Sycamores, dropping him to 2-2 on the season.
Hayes pitched six innings, allowing eight hits and five runs,
all earned. He walked five Shockers as well. Andrew Strange
worked two thirds of an inning in relief, allowing two hits and
a run. Brian Gass finished the game with 1.1 innings of work,
giving up just one Shocker hit.
Indiana State got on
the board for its lone score of the game in the top of the
seventh inning when Chris Schmidt reached on a throwing error by
the Wichita shortstop. He came around to score on a Shocker
miscue in the outfield which allowed Brett Siegmund to reach
base.
Wichita posted four
runs through four innings before the Sycamores made it 4-1 with
Schmidt’s score in the seventh. The Shockers added a pair in the
bottom of the seventh frame as well as one more in the eighth
for the 7-1 victory.
Offensively, Indiana
State received his from Ryan Bond, Schmidt, Marcus Artner, Dave
Brumagin and Sean Osborne.
WSU’s Travis Banwart
pitched seven innings and struck out 10 Sycamores, while
allowing four hits.
The Sycamores return
to action on Saturday, March 24 with the second game of the
series versus Wichita State. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
(ET) and can be heard locally on WISU-FM (89.7).
