FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INDIANA STATE USES STRONG EFFORT FROM RYAN HAYES TO WIN, 9-5
TERRE HAUTE,
Ind.
-- Indiana State tossed starting pitcher Ryan Hayes for over 120
pitches as he earned his third victory of the year as the
Sycamores downed Valparaiso in a four-game series opening win,
9-5 on Friday evening at Sycamore Field. ISU improves to 11-11,
while the Crusaders fall to 4-13.
Hayes moves to 3-2 on
the season as he threw 122 pitches over six and two thirds
innings of work, allowing eight hits, four runs and walking
five. He struck out three batters on the day. Chad Dawson earned
his first save of the season, by cleaning up the final two and a
third innings, giving up four hits, a run and striking out
three.
After spotting the
Crusaders a run in the top of the first, ISU came back in the
bottom of the frame to tie when Nick Ciolli drove a ball up the
middle to score Chris Schmidt. Schmidt reached on a two-out
single and stole second before making the score 1-1.
ISU then fell behind
2-1 in the top of the third, but the Sycamores grabbed the lead
for the rest of the game in the bottom of frame when they scored
a pair. Ryan Bond opened with a single and then Josh Abercrombie
walked to put runners and first and second. The bases got juiced
on a Chris Schmidt infield hit, and then Ciolli drove in Bond
with a sacrifice fly to knot the score at two. Dave Brumagin
grounded out to score Abercrombie to give ISU the 3-2 advantage.
In the fourth, Ryan
Bond doubled to score Ryan Strausborger before Abercrombie
stepped up to single in Bond for the 5-2 lead. After Valpo
inched closer at 5-4 in the fifth, ISU plated Brumagin, who
tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Marcus Artner for the
6-4 lead.
ISU stretched the lead
out to 7-4 in the sixth when Brumagin recorded the Sycamores’
third sacrifice fly of the game to drive in Abercrombie.
Valpo made it 7-5 in
the eighth, but ISU came back with a final push to make it 9-5
when Brumagin drilled a two-out single to center field which
scored Paul Strack and Abercrombie.
Schmidt finished
3-for-3 in the game; two days after his 15-game hitting streak
came to end against Eastern Illinois. Brumagin was 2-for-4 in
the game with four RBI while Ciolli drove in a pair. Bond
finished 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI, while
Abercrombie crossed the plate three times in going 2-for-4.
As a team, ISU
collected 14 hits, two for extra bases, and stole three bases.
Catcher Sean Osborne was hit by a pitch three separate times in
the game. That is believed to at least tie a school record as
the mark for a team is four in a game.
Indiana State and
Valparaiso continue their series Saturday, March 31 at Sycamore
Field with a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. (ET).
The first game will be seven innings, followed by a nine inning
affair. The games can be viewed online for free by logging onto

MEDIA NOTE: The time
for Sunday’s series finale has been changed to 1 p.m. (ET). It
was listed as an 11 a.m. (ET) start on all previous schedules!
