INDIANA STATE FALLS TO LATE EVANSVILLE HOME RUN

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State Sycamores battled one of the better teams in the Missouri Valley Conference, Evansville, to the bitter end, but in the end it was the Purple Aces who conjured up some magic of their own to down ISU with a three-run homer in the eighth and take the 5-2 MVC victory. The Sycamores fall to 14-13, 0-4 MVC while Evansville improved to 21-11, 4-3 MVC.

With the score tied at two heading into the top of the eighth inning, Adam Lindsay hit a pair of Evansville batters, before Wahl drilled a home run over the field in right center for the 5-2 lead. Lindsay’s record fell to 1-4 as he took the loss in the game.

Starter Ryan Hayes pitched well, going 7.0 innings, and allowing a pair of runs in the sixth inning. He struck out three batters in the game.

ISU took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Chris Schmidt which scored Ryan Bond. Bond reached earlier in the inning on a walk, before stealing second base. Bond’s run gave ISU the early 1-0 lead.

After Evansville used a two-RBI double by Wahl in the sixth for the 2-1 lead, ISU answered to knot the score at two in the seventh. Ryan Strausborger led off the frame with a single and then moved to second on a sacrifice by Bond. He scored to make the score 2-2 when Josh Abercrombie reached on a Purple Ace error.

Wahl gave Evansville its final lead with his three run homer for the 5-2 victory.

Dave Brumagin led the way offensively for the Sycamores, going 3-for-4 in the game.

Indiana State entered the game on a three-game winning streak, but dropped its fourth MVC decision in as many tries with the loss to Evansville.

The Sycamores and Purple Aces continue their three-game MVC series tomorrow at 1 p.m. (ET).
