FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TWO SYCAMORES KEEP HITTING STREAK ALIVE IN LOSS TO CREIGHTON
TERRE
HAUTE, Ind. – A pair of Indiana State hitting
streaks stayed alive, despite the Sycamores falling 16-0 to the
hands of Creighton on Sunday afternoon (April 22) at Sycamore
Field. ISU falls to 18-19, 2-10 MVC while the ‘Jays fell to
27-11, 12-3 MVC.
Sophomore Dave
Brumagin reached base on a single in the bottom of the seventh
to push his streak to a career-high 11 games. Freshman Nick
Ciolli stretched his streak to nine games with a single earlier
in the game.
ISU scratched out just
five hits in the game as Creighton belted out 14.
The ‘Jays took control
of the game in the top of the first with six unearned runs to
take a quick 6-0 advantage. Ryan Strausborger committed an error
early in the frame and Brett Siegmund was just a hair short at
tagging third base for a force play in time allowing the first
Creighton run to score with two outs. Creighton’s Ogden hit the
first of his two homers in the first inning, a grand slam to
give the ‘Jays a 6-0 lead.
Creighton did not
score in the second inning, the only frame in which they failed
to score a run.
Starter Ryan Hayes
went 2.2 innings, allowing five hits, nine runs (six of which
were unearned) while walking three. Skyler Pearson pitched the
next 3.2 innings, giving up eight hits and seven runs while
walking five and striking out two. Josh Varno cleaned up the
game by tossing the final .2 of an inning, giving up just a hit
with one strikeout. Hayes fell to 3-4 with the loss.
For Creighton, Ben
Mancuso went the full seven innings to improve to 6-1 on the
season. He allowed just five hits and no runs while striking out
three.
Indiana State returns
to action on Tuesday, April 24 with a non-conference game
against Miami (Ohio). First pitch is set for 6 p.m. (ET) at
Sycamore Field.
