COLORADO CAPTURES MEN'S NCAA CROSS COUNTRY NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The
Colorado men’s cross country team has won the 2006 NCAA Cross
Country National Championship at the LaVerne Gibson Championship
Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind. For the third consecutive
season, and the fourth time in the last five years, Indiana State
University hosted the event.
Colorado's top runner en route to
their second championship in the past three seasons was Brent
Vaughn, who finished eighth with a time of 31:13. The Buffalos
finished with a team score of 94 to win the event.
Following Colorado in the race
was Wisconsin and tallied 142 points to claim second. Iona was third
with a score of 172, while Stanford scored 262 to finish third and
Stanford was fifth at 195.
Individually, the race was
dominated by BYU's Josh Rohatinsky, who finished in a time of
30:44.9, winning by nearly eight seconds over second place finisher,
Neftalem Araia of Stanford. At the race’s halfway point, there was
an eight-way tie for first with a time of 15:19.
Araia finished with a time of
30:52.6, while Southern Utah's Jess Baumgartner was third at
30:53.2. Rounding out the top five were, Northern Arizona's Lopez
Lomong in fourth at 30:59.8, while Providence's Martin Fagan was
fifth with a time of 31:01.0.
The 2006 event will be known for
its warmer than normal temperatures as the mercury soared near 50
degrees at race time. But times proved to be slower because over
five inches of rain fell on the course in the week leading up to the
event.
