KYLE MITCHELL TABBED AS GATEWAY FOOTBALL CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

ST. LOUIS ó Gateway Football Conference officials have tabbed sophomore defensive end Kyle Mitchell (East Chicago, Ill./Central) as their co-defensive player of the week following the Sycamores 22-14 loss to Northern Iowa. Mitchell shares the honor with linebacker Lee Russell of Western Illinois.

Mitchell got ISU on the board down 19-0 early in the fourth quarter when he picked off a Tom Petrie pass and raced down the field for a 72-yard touchdown return, the first such return by a Sycamore since the 1995 season. Then he recovered a Panther fumble later in the contest that set up ISU's second scoring drive, moving them within a touchdown at 22-14. On the Sycamores ensuing defensive stop, Mitchell made two of the three tackles to give Indiana State the chance at a thrilling victory. For the game, he had the interception and a fumble recovery, plus a sack, a tackle for loss, a pass breakup, and seven total tackles.

Mitchell is the third Sycamore this season to be honored by the GFC with Sam Logan receiving offensive player of the week honors following the Eastern Illinois game, and Fred Frietag taking offensive lineman honors after defeating Florida International.

ISU is at home for the next two weeks, with the first game coming this Saturday, October 18 at 1:05 p.m. (CDT) against Youngstown State.
