team’s number one quarterback coming out of
spring drills, Schmidt will be looked upon as a
team-leader after converting back to quarterback
from wide receiver.

primarily as a wide receiver in the spread
offense, hauling in 11 passes for 134 yards, an
average of 12.2 yards per catch ... Scored a
pair of touchdowns against NCAA Division I-AA
National Runner-up Northern Iowa in the UNI Dome
... Long catch of the year was a 28-yarder from
Blayne Baggett at Missouri State ... Caught at

Illinois, the week before by completing 6-of-12

High School — A twin
brother of teammate Chris Schmidt, Ben threw for
2,577 yards and 34 touchdowns in two years as
the starting quarterback for Jasper High School
... During his senior season, Ben threw for
1,376 yards and 20 touchdowns and ran for 1,183
yards and scored 18 touchdowns ... He was an AP
Honorable Mention All-State selection in 2001
and 2002 and was named a member of the
Tremendous Twenty-Six Indiana in 2002 ...
