FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LANSING NAMED ASSISTANT
MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana
State head men’s basketball coach Royce Waltman announced
the hiring of Greg Lansing as an assistant coach. Lansing returns
to ISU after having served on Waltman staff from 1997-1999. He spent
the past seven seasons at the University of Iowa.
“I couldn’t be more excited to join
the staff at Indiana State,” said Lansing. “It’s
a great opportunity to work with people you trust and you know are
going to work hard. When I left for Iowa seven years ago it was
a very difficult decision because I wanted to learn more about the
game from coach Waltman, and now I have that opportunity.”
The Hawkeyes posted a 25-9 record and finished
11-5 in conference play last season en route to posting an undefeated
mark at home. Iowa then entered the Big Ten Tournament as the No.
2 seed and claimed the tourney championship in Indianapolis, giving
the Hawkeyes their second tournament championship in six years.
Iowa also advanced to the Big Ten Tournament Championship game in
2002.
“We are really fortunate to have Greg join
our staff,” said Waltman. “It was important for us to
find someone who could come in and contribute to the staff right
away. Greg is a strong asset for us on the floor coaching, as well
as in recruiting.”
During Lansing’s time at Iowa, the Hawkeyes
advanced to the NCAA Tournament three times and earned three bids
to the National Invitational Tournament. They posted a winning record
in each of the last six seasons. The 25 victories in 2006 was the
highest win total since 1986-87 (30). The Hawkeyes also set a Big
10 Tournament record, winning seven consecutive games in 2001 and
2002.
Lansing originally came to ISU in 1995 and served
two seasons on Sherman Dillard’s staff before joining Waltman
in 1997. His first season on Waltman’s staff produced a 16-11
record, the first winning season at ISU in 18 years. The Trees followed
with a 15-12 mark in 1999.
Prior to joining the Sycamores, Lansing was a
highly successful prep coach at Roosevelt High School in Des Moines,
Iowa. In his first season at Roosevelt, Lansing guided the Roughriders
to a winning season for the first time in 12 years.
He earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of South
Dakota in 1990 and completed his Master’s degree from USD
in 1992. As a player, Lansing helped the Coyotes reach the NCAA
Division II Tournament in his final two seasons. He was a two-time
USD Defensive Player of the Year honoree and was the league defensive
player of the year in his senior campaign. Following his playing
career, Lansing worked at USD as a graduate assistant for two years
before joining the staff as a full-time assistant for the 1992-93
season.
