SYCAMORES FALL VICTIM TO SECOND HALF RUN AT CREIGHTON

OMAHA, Neb. - Indiana State hung with the first place Creighton Bluejays for the first 30 minutes of action, but the veteran Jays handed ISU their fifth straight loss, 71-55 at the Qwest Center.  Trent Wurtz (Sheboygan, WI) led the Sycamores with 16 points, 14 in the first half, while Jay Tunnell (Topeka, KS) added 13.

The Sycamores trailed by just six, 48-42 after an Adam Arnold (Decatur, IN) lay-up.  But ISU would then go almost six minutes without a bucket.  A Tunnell three-pointer ended the drought, 53-45 with 10:12 left to play.  But Creighton (14-7, 8-3) put the defensive pressure on, holding the Sycamores to one field goal over the next four minutes to push the lead up to 15, 61-46.

In the first half, ISU (11-9, 4-6) trailed by eight 25-17 after Nate Funk hit two free throws.  The Sycamores came right back, thanks to Wurtz two freebies and a tip-in to cut the lead to two, 27-25 with 4:46 left in the half.  A jumper by Funk, a lay-up by Anthony Tolliver and a three by Josh Dotzler pushed Creighton’s lead to six, 34-28.  ISU then got a lay-up by Wurtz and three free throws from the senior to cut the lead to one, 34-33.  Creighton then closed out the half on a 4-0 run an led 38-33 at the intermission.

Indiana State outscored the Jays 24-20 in the paint, but we’re outscored 15-3 off of turnovers.  Funk led four Bluejays in double figures with 20.  Gabe Moore had seven assists in the loss.

ISU now heads to Southern Illinois on Wednesday night to face the Salukis.  Tip off is set for 8:05pm in Terre Haute.
