SYCAMORES FALTER LATE AT WICHITA STATE
WICHITA, Kan. -
Indiana State had three players score in double figures, but a seven
plus minute dry spell in the second half proved too much to overcome
as Wichita State knocked off the Sycamores 61-45 at Koch Arena in
Wichita.
ISU (12-12, 5-9) trailed
by just two at the half, 26-24. The Shockers (16-9, 7-7) pushed
that lead to five at the start of the second half, but ISU three
buckets by Jay Tunnell (Topeka, KS) in a three minute span to
tie the game at 40. That’s when Wichita State turned up the
defense, going on a 12-0 run to make it 52-40 before Gabe Moore (Little
Rock, Ark) hit a three to get the lead to nine, 52-43. A
three-pointer by Kyle Wilson, and two more hoops pushed the lead to
16.
The Sycamores came out of
the gate fast, thanks to Trent Wurtz (Sheboygan, WI) 10 point
first half. ISU led by five three different times in the first
half. A three pointer by Sean Ogirri gave the Shockers their first
lead of the game, 15-14 with seven minutes left in the half. ISU
got the lead up to four on a Harry Marshall (Bowling Green, IN)
lay-up that made it 21-17 before an 8-3 run by Wichita State closed
out the half.
Wurtz, Moore and Marshall
each had 10 for the Sycamores. For Marshall, it matched his career
high. Moore also had five steals in the game, moving past Marcus
Howard for 8th all-time in ISU history with 127. He is
two steals away from passing recently inducted Hall of Famer Carl
Nicks on the list. ISU shot 35.3% from the field, and was out
rebounded 37-20.
The Sycamores get back on
the road Sunday afternoon when they visit Evansville. Tip-off time
is set for 4:30pm EST. The game can be heard on WSDM 92.7 FM and
can be seen on WTWO Newschannel 2.
