THREE FORMER SYCAMORES NAMED TO MVC ALL-CENTENNIAL TEAM

ST. LOUIS - Three former Indiana State greats, Larry Bird, Carl Nicks and John Sherman Williams have been named to the Top 50 players list as part of the Missouri Valley Conference Centennial Celebration.

The list of Top 50 players and Top 10 coaches were determined through an on-line fan vote, in-arena ballots and a centennial committee.  A total of 100 former Valley greats were on the original ballot.  A total of 7,871 votes were cast for men’s basketball.

Bird was placed in the “Starting Five” for the Valley along with Hersey Hawkins of Bradley, Ed Macauley of St. Louis, Xavier McDaniel of Wichita State and Oscar Robertson of Cincinnati.  Henry Iba, who coached at Oklahoma A&M, was named the coach.  

Bird, from 1976-79, was a two-time MVC Player of the Year who currently ranks third all-time in MVC career scoring, fourth in rebounding and sixth in steals.  He has been named to the MVC Hall of Fame and Naismith Hall of Fame.

Nicks was a guard on the National Runner-up team in 1979.  Nicks was a two-time first team All-MVC selection and was named All-American in 1989.  Sherman-Williams was a four time All-MVC selection, twice being named to the first team.  He as a three time All-American and currently ranks fourth on the MVC career scoring list.
