FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SYCAMORE LOSS IS SECOND
OVERTIME HEARTBREAK THIS SEASON
Box Score
OMAHA, Neb. - Sophomore Lauren Podolski knuckle-balled a shot from
30 yards out that breezed over the keepers reach and put the Sycamores
up 1-0 in the second half. However the goal would not be enough
for ISU to snap Creighton’s 14-match conference home unbeaten
streak and fell in overtime 1-2.
“I told the girls tonight that they shouldn't feel disappointed
in they way they played,” head coach Vernon Croft said. “The
girls played as hard as they could, but it just didn’t work
out for us today.”
The loss finds the women still looking for a conference win (0-3)
and traveling to Northern Iowa on Sunday to find it. The Sycamores
have challenged their conference opponents with two of the three
games going into overtime, but have not been able to secure a win.
Neither team was able to put points on the board in the first half
with an equal seven shots from each team with three being on goal.
Indiana State fared better with corner kicks in the first half with
three compared to the Blue jays’ one, but couldn’t quite
capitalize.
Podolski’s second half goal would put the Sycamores on top
at the 54:10 mark on the clock. That lead would hold for over twenty
minutes until Creighton’s Emily Munn won a pass of a corner
kick and blasted the ball from 2 yards out for the equalizing goal
at 75:24.
Both teams battled to a stand off the remainder of the half and
it wasn’t until 1:30 remaining on the clock that the game
was decided. With time expiring Creighton’s Ivonne Valentin’s
shot off a pass from Kristine Willrett would find the back of the
net and seal the victory for the Jays after 98:26 of soccer.
The early losses in conference have put the Sycamores in a hole,
but they know that a conference win against any one of the remaining
teams on their schedule may mean a playoff birth in the conference
tournament.
The women will travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa to face Northern Iowa
on Sunday before returning home to face Illinois State and Evansville
next weekend.
