SYCAMORES STRUGGLE OFFENSIVELY AND FALL AT EASTERN ILLINOIS 0-3

Box Score

CHARLESTON, Ill. - The women’s soccer team had a tough first game to an already tough road trip when they lost to Eastern Illinois 0-3 on Friday. EIU is the defending champion from the Ohio Valley Conference-and next on ISU’s schedule is Illinois, who reached the quarter finals of the NCAA College Cup last year.

The Panthers struck early when EIU’s Trisha Walter scored a goal after just six minutes of play. The goal was the eventual game winner, but the Panthers would add more to the lead in the second half.

“I just don’t think we played well today,” head coach Vernon Croft said. “When we gave up that goal just six minutes into the game, I just didn’t feel like we were very committed.”

Eastern Illinois would add two more goals in the second half to pad their lead. Lee Ann Langsfield was credited with a goal at the 61:43 mark, that was an apparent own goal by the ISU defense.

There wasn’t any dispute on Walter’s second goal at 81:36 in the game when the junior forward stole the ball and scored as she moved down the right side of the field.

The loss against the Panthers marks the fourth time the Sycamores have been blanked this year. However, Indiana State played a cleaner game than EIU, committing only 5 penalties, including zero in the second half, compared to 12 by the Panthers. ISU will look to regroup and put more points on the board when they face the Fighting Illini of Illinois on Sunday in Champaign.
