TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Indiana State women’s soccer team
(2-4-0) played with intensity and played the majority of their win
against IUPUI (2-3-0) Sunday on the front third of the field. The
Sycamores were rewarded on three separate occasions to finish the
game with a win 3-1. The victory snaps a three game skid for the
team, heading into a three game road trip.
“It feels good to get this win today,” head coach Vernon
Croft said. “We worked hard to get it and I’m proud
of the girls’ passion on the field today.”
In the first half, the Sycamores played the ball on the IUPUI third
for the majority of the 45 minutes. The women would come close to
finding the goal in the 16th minute when a Sycamore shot bounced
off the head of an IUPUI defender and nearly went into their own
goal. The Sycamores would score a short time later, but the goal
was called back from an offsides penalty.
The lone goal in the first half for IUPUI came off a ball that
was run down before going over the back line. The ball crossed in
front of the ISU goal and the Sycamore’s defense attempt to
clear the ball went into the back of the net for a goal credited
to the Jaguars.
In the second half the Sycamores continued their offensive pressure
on the ball and out shot the Jaguars 17 to 3.
“I wasn’t worried in that second half that we hadn’t
had a goal yet,” Croft said. “I knew as soon as that
first one went in we would have more.”
The first goal for the home team would find the back of the net
at 66:36 when junior Nichole Tiggs took a cross from freshman Alyssa
Ramsey and put the ball in. Tiggs would be a part of the next goal,
less than two minutes later, when her pass to Meaghan Gaffney was
shot and cleared the jumping goal keeper for the eventual game winner.
The Sycamores would add another insurance goal at the 88:03 mark
when sophomore Lauren Podolski blasted a shot in the center of the
box that easily blurred by the keeper.
The win makes Indiana State undefeated at home when playing on
Sunday. It also gives the Sycamores some confidence heading into
the next three games on the road against Eastern Illinois (9/16),
Illinois (9/18) and IPFW (9/23).
