WIN OF THE SEASON 2-1 OVER MURRAY STATE
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Indiana State women’s
soccer team fell behind early, but scored two unanswered goals to
overcome the Murray State Racers 2-1 at home on Sunday. The win
evens the Sycamores to 1-1 on the season and leaves MSU still looking
for their first win at 0-2.
The Sycamores looked more athletically sound and out shot the Racers
18-16 during the course of the game. However, Murray State would
strike first on a goal from Laura Oppegard off a booming free kick
that just fell just beneath the top cross bar.
Indiana State would even the score at the 30:02 mark off a pass
from last year’s conference freshman of the year, Lauren Podolski,
to freshman Amanda Gogel for the Sycamore’s first regular
season goal of the year.
The teams would continue to battle through the end of the first
half and into the beginning of the second. The physical play led
to a yellow card being played on Murray State’s Kayla Jones
just before half at 43:21.
ISU’s Shae Fehribach would come close on two kicks in the
second half to score the game winner. The sophomore from Evansville,
Ind. connected on a cross from freshman Sarah Whiteley that was
saved by Murray State’s Annie Fortier. Fehribach’s next
attempt would ricochet off the face of the keeper, but was cleared
by the defense. In all, the second year player had a team-high three
shots on goal.
The eventual game winner would come off the foot of Lauren Podolski
at the 78:18 mark, off an assist from Fehribach. The goal marked
the third point for Podolski on the game.
“I was really impressed with the perseverance of the team
today,” head coach Vernon Croft said. “They came back
from the loss on Friday and continued to fight all day today. I
was really proud of everyone’s effort.”
The Sycamores will now have the week to prepare for two road contests
against Wisconsin-Green Bay Sept. 2 and Valparaiso on Sept. 4. Both
games will be rematches from last year when Indiana State fell to
Valpo on the road 0-3 and beat the Phoenix of UWGB 3-2 at home.
