WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS
TO THE MEMPHIS TIGERS 6-1
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State women’s
soccer team took the field on Saturday in their first exhibition
match of the season and came up short against the visiting Memphis
Tigers, losing 6-1. Despite the loss head coach Vernon Croft was
able to use the three 30-minute periods to play 21 of the available
24 athletes on the roster.
The game began well for the Sycamores when sophomore Shae Fehribach
scored the first goal of the game at 14:13 with a shot from the
center of the field, about 10 yards from the goal. However, the
women would struggle on keeping possession during the game and allowed
six unanswered goals by the Tigers.
The equalizer came when Memphis freshman Kate Murphy scored a goal
from 25 yards at 28:06 that went into the net just over the head
of ISU’s goal keeper Rachel Rudzis.
Both teams used subs heading into the second period to watch the
progress of other players. The lone goal of the period was from
Memphis junior Shoko Mikami who scored on a header at 49:12 off
a corner kick by teammate Courtnee Melton.
During the third period the Tigers pressed the ball constantly
and were rewarded with four goals during the final 30-minutes of
the scrimmage. The first goal of the period was scored by Mikami
at 64:49 off a kick that stated near the left corner of the goal
box and sailed to the far corner of the goal for her second score
of the day.
The Tigers would score again at 78:42 off a corner kick from Candace
Halvorson that was redirected to the back of the net by Lauren Everhart.
Memphis would finish the period with two straight goals from freshman
Kylie Hayes who scored on a breakaway and a shot from right of the
box.
The Sycamores will look to regroup and finish their final exhibition
game against Depauw University on Sunday in Greencastle. The women
will begin the regular-season against Ball State at home on August
26.
