SYCAMORES LOG TIE IN THIRD CONSECUTIVE 2OT GAME

Box Score

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – For the third consecutive game the women’s soccer team was forced into double overtime, and for the second time came out of the 110 minutes with a tie. The match up with Southern Utah ended with a 2-2 draw after neither team could hit the game winner in the overtime periods.

The Sycamores started quickly and scored in the first half off a header from junior Nichole Tiggs off an assist from senior Elaine Carlier. Tiggs’ header off a corner kick found the back of the net with only five minutes into the game.

The Thunderbirds would tie the game, after 29:26 had expired, off a ball that SUU’s Dani Lavigne blasted off a rebound that bounced off the top cross bar.

The teams would continue to play to a draw until ISU freshman Rachel Gordon bent a ball from the center of the box to the left corner of the goal three minutes into the second half. The goal marked the first collegiate goal for the native of Las Vegas, Nevada.

SUU would again fight back and less than a minute later a ball lobbed from the middle of the field by Ashley Smith slipped through the hands of ISU keeper Brittany Caraboa and dropped into the goal.

Neither team would find the net for the rest of the game to end the match in a stale mate. The Sycamores’ best chance came in the second overtime when Tiggs shot the ball from the left corner of the box, only to have the ball bounce off the top corner of the cross bar.

The game marked the first time an Indiana State team has had to play back-to-back-to-back overtime games. But head coach Vernon Croft was pleased with his teams’ efforts.

“Our girls are spent,” Croft said at the end of the game, “but they all responded very well to the situations in the game.”

The Sycamores are still undefeated at home on Sundays and stand with a 2-0-1 record and 3-6-2 overall. ISU will now enter the throngs of conference play with three straight road games against Drake (Oct. 9), Creighton (Oct. 14) and Northern Iowa (Oct. 16).
