SYCAMORES SECURE FIRST
CONFERENCE WIN OVER UNI 2-0
Box Score
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Indiana State women’s soccer team
secured their first conference win of the season with a 2-0 decision
over Northern Iowa on Sunday. The win, on the road, ends a three-game
conference losing streak and puts the Sycamores in a good position
to qualify for the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
“I was very proud how our girls played today,” head
coach Vernon Croft said. The play was especially strong considering
the Sycamores had played Creighton to an overtime loss on Friday
and faced a Northern Iowa team that had been idle since October
12, Croft noted.
The Sycamores shot the ball during the game at a high percentage
with 10 of 12 shots being on goal. ISU started quickly in the first
half with seven shots, but the six on goal were saved by Panther
keeper Krista Thorley. The teams would go to the half scoreless,
but the Sycamores would carry their first half momentum into the
second.
ISU’s Nichole Tiggs would end the scoring drought after 57:37
ticks when she put a ball into the back of the net off a Libby Knight
pass. The goal marked the team-leading fifth time the native of
Arizona had scored a goal this season.
The Sycamores would add a little cushion to the lead later in the
half despite being out shot 13 to 5 and on the trailing end in corner
kicks 7 to 2 in the final 45 minutes. Freshman Amanda Gogel scored
her second goal of the year at 81:14 off an assist from Callie McDonough
to seal the win for Indiana State.
Sophomore keeper Rachel Rudzis logged eight saves en-route to the
shut out victory. The Panthers were credited with 20 shots, but
the eight shots on goal were each handled by Rudzis.
The Sycamores will look to move up in the standings to lock in
a home tournament game when they face conference foes Illinois State
on Friday and Evansville on Sunday. The game with Evansville will
also coincide with senior day festivities for the Sycamores.
