SYCAMORES DROP FIRST
ROAD CONTEST 2-1
GREEN BAY, Wisc. – Despite out shooting
Wisconsin-Green Bay 23-15, the women’s soccer team was outlasted
by the Phoenix 2-1 on Friday. The loss drops the Sycamores to 1-2
on the season, but the loss came after a tremendous effort by the
team.
“I really think we were playing with passion,” head
coach Vernon Croft said. “We made a couple of mistakes and
they capitalized on them.”
The Sycamores attacked UW-Green Bay throughout the game. ISU junior
Beth Wagenhoffer had a game-high seven shots and teammate Elaine
Carlier had six shots. Despite the barrage, the Phoenix would get
on the board first.
UW-Green Bay junior Stephanie Gross found the back of the net at
19:17 off a pass from Dixie Shubert. The Phoenix would add a second
goal at 67:22 in the second half off the foot of sophomore Jennie
Gorwitz assisted by Gross and Katherine Kadar.
Despite being down two the Sycamores kept fighting and pressing
the Green Bay defense. The ISU attack scored a goal with about ten
minutes left in the game, only to have the goal called back due
to an offside call.
The lone goal for the women came with one second on the clock when
junior Nichole Tiggs took a ball from the keeper’s miscue
and put it in the back of the net. The goal puts Tiggs in sole place
of second place on ISU’s All-time goals scored list with 13.
The women will now travel to Valparaiso, Indiana to face the Crusaders
on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in the final installment of the two game
road trip.
