SYCAMORE REGULAR SEASON ENDS WITH AN EXCLAMATION POINT

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Indiana State women’s soccer team ended its 2006 regular season campaign with an exclamatory 4-0 win over the Butler Bulldogs on Wednesday afternoon at Victory Field. The win was headlined with several story lines, including an individual record falling, another team record being eclipsed and a four goal plateau that hadn’t been reached since 2004.

The win caps off the Sycamores’ 8-9-0 season and drops the Bulldogs to 5-10-2.

ISU needed only five points to tie the team record in points accumulated during a season heading into the game and poured in a 12 point effort, setting a new ISU record with a grand total of 85 points. In all, the 2006 Sycamores have tallied 27 goals and 31 assists during the record-breaking season (records were 27 goals and 24 assists set in 2001).

Indiana State began the record-breaking afternoon with a Sarah Whiteley goal in the 25th minute. Whiteley approached the box, drawing the Butler keeper, Kirby Zwickel, out of the goal and chipped the ball into the back of the net. Meaghan Gaffney was credited with the assist, leading to the first of several points for the junior midfielder.

The 1-0 lead would extend into the half with the advantage of shots in favor of the Bulldogs (seven to five). Indiana State keeper, Rachel Rudzis logged two of her four saves during the first 45 minutes of play.

Following the break, the offensive blitz would begin as the Sycamores scored their next three goals in the span of 17 minutes in the middle of the half.

Amanda Gogel scored her third and fourth goals of the year as her strikes in the 56th and 60th minute found the goal, building the ISU lead to 3-0. Lauren Podolski was credited with the assist on each goal, propelling the junior to No. 1 on ISU’s single season all-time points leader, breaking the mark set by Nichole Tiggs in 2004.

Podolski has already set career marks with her seven goals and nine assists for a grand total of 23 points this season. The captain has poured in 21 goals and 17 assists for a total of 59 points, each one a record, during her career at Indiana State.

To finish the game with Butler, the Sycamores scored their final goal as Gaffney collected her third point of the game with a strike in the 73rd minute on an assist from Alyssa Ramsey. The 4-0 shutout win was the first four-goal game for the Sycamores since Oct. 29, 2004 vs. McNeese State.

The team will look to carry the momentum built during the game into its match-up with the Evansville Purple Aces in the first round of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Tournament on Sunday. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Black Beauty Field on the campus of the University of Evansville.
