SYCAMORES FALL TO DRAKE 0-1 ON SENIOR DAY

Box Score

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State finished the conference regular season with a 0-1 set back to the Drake Bulldogs at the ISU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon. Prior to the game, senior Katie Cochrane was honored as the lone senior on the Sycamore squad.

The loss drops the Sycamores to 7-9-0 and 2-4-0 in conference and qualifies ISU as a six seed going into the conference tournament and pitting the team against Creighton or Evansville on the road next weekend. Drake improved to 10-5-2 and 5-0-1 to win its fourth consecutive regular season conference title.

“We wanted to put ourselves in a position to host an MVC tournament game,” head coach Vernon Croft said of his expectations over the weekend. “However, we will play on the road and we know we can play with anybody. Our players know they will have to come out and compete.”

On paper and on the field the teams battled equally with a slight advantage going to the Bulldogs in shots 17 to14, but the Sycamores leading in corner kick opportunities at 2 to 1.

Drake’s Melissa Nelson would score the lone goal of the match in the 32nd minute as the lead pass from Sarah Foote found Nelson in front of the Sycamore defense and the senior beat ISU keeper Rachel Rudzis to the top corner of the goal.

Despite the lone blemish, Rudzis recorded nine saves while Drake’s Jenny Schroeder logged five saves in her shutout win.

The Sycamores will finish the regular season on the road Wednesday as the team travels the short distance to Indianapolis and the campus of Butler University. The showdown with the Bulldogs will kick-off at 4:00 p.m.
