SYCAMORES SPLIT SUNDAY’S DOUBLE HEADER AGAINST CREIGHTON

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Sycamores and Bluejays were forced to cancel Saturday’s games because of wet field conditions at Price Field. Due to this cancellation the teams moved the double header to Sunday, April 15 with games starting at 11:00 a.m. eastern time.

Game one proved to be a pitchers duel that lasted until the bottom of the 11th inning when pinch hitter Senior Yvette Tovar coming up with the game winning hit into right field, bringing home Freshman Amber Paz from third base.

This game matched Indiana State’s Darcy Wood against Tara Oltman, a Freshman for the Bluejays. For the game Wood went 11.0 innings giving up no runs on only two hits with nine strikeouts in the complete game shutout. Oltman went 10.1 innings giving up one run on six hits with five strikeouts in the loss.

Through 7.0 innings the two teams combined for a total of four hits and zero runs scored.

Tovar went 1 for 1 with the game winning RBI and Senior Jackie Chomicki went 2 for 3 as she continues swing a hot bat.

Game two continued where game one left off as the Sycamores struck quickly as Senior Stephanie Spychaj sent a line shot into the outfield bringing home Jackie Chomicki. This made the score 1-0 for the Sycamores at the conclusion of the 1st inning.

In the 4th inning the Sycamores struck again, this time off the bat of Junior Kelsey Anderson who hit a homerun to the scoreboard in right field with a runner aboard. Courtesy of Anderson’s long shot the Sycamores claimed a 3-0 advantage at the end of 4 innings.

The Bluejays took over in the 6th inning, starting with a two-run homerun off the bat of TJ Eadus. The Bluejays would go on to rally two more runs across home plate to claim the game deciding lead over the Sycamores 4-3.

Freshman Meagan McCurdy started the game for the Sycamores and went 5.1 innings giving up 3 runs in that 6th inning before Coach Brenda Coldren decided to bring back Darcy Wood (9-16) for a relief appearance. Wood went the rest of the way, going 1.2 innings giving up one run on two hits while receiving the loss.

The Bluejays started game two with Amanda Hess who lasted 5.0 innings, giving up three runs on four hits, before Creighton brought back Tara Oltman to finish the game. Oltman went the remaining 2.0 innings without giving up any hits or runs.

Kelsey Anderson went 1 for 3 with the two-run homerun and Stephanie Spychaj went 1 for 3 with an RBI of her own.

The Sycamores now stand at (16-20, 2-10 MVC) while the Bluejays are now (28-10, 10-3 MVC).

The Sycamores return to action on Wednesday, April 18 for a 3:00 p.m. game against nationally ranked Illinois State at Price Field on the campus of Indiana State University.
