SYCAMORES MAUL THE BEARS IN GAME 2 (11-0), DROP GAME ONE (4-6)

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – In game one Missouri State raced to a 6-0 lead going into the bottom of the 7th innings where the Sycamores scored four runs of their own to make the final score 6-4 for the Bears.

The Bears got things going in the top of the 1st with a two-out two-run homerun by Junior Michelle Armentrout.

The Bears starting pitcher Junior Melissa Porche (14-14) held the Sycamores in check as the Bears added four more runs to their lead going into the bottom of the 7th.

The Sycamore rally began as leadoff batter Junior Katie Iocoangeli walked. The next batter up was Senior Jessica McGivney who doubled into the gap in right center, advancing Iocoangeli to third. Next up was pinch hitter Junior Kelsey Anderson who promptly laced a single into the gap scoring both runners from 2nd and 3rd. Senior Natalie Kopp came on to pinch run for Anderson and eventually came around to score as the First Baseman errored on a hit by Senior Jackie Chomicki. The fourth run of the inning would come home with a long drive by Sophomore Meredith Simpson that bounced off the outfield wall, bringing home Chomicki.

The rally would not prove to be enough for the Sycamore to overcome the Bears in game one.

Indiana State’s Junior pitcher Darcy Wood (10-17) went 7.0 innings giving up six runs on seven hits while striking out eight in the loss.

Chomicki went 2 for 4 with one run scored and Anderson went 2 for 3 with two RBI.

Following a brief delay to fix the field the teams met for game two of the scheduled doubleheader.

In game two the Sycamores used their momentum from the end of game one to claim an early lead and never look back as they claimed a dominate 11-0 win in 5 innings due to the eight-run rule. The eight-run rule states that if a team is eight or more runs ahead after 5.0 innings they will be declared the winner, forgoing the last two innings.

The bottom of the 1st was where the game was decided. The Sycamores scored seven runs on three hits in the inning to make the score 7-0 after the first frame.

Starting pitcher Freshman Meagan McCurdy (8-3) pitched a gem going 5.0 innings while only allowing two hits in the complete game shutout.

The Sycamores added runs in the 2nd and 4th to make the final score 11-0 in the 5.0 inning game.

Chomicki had another outstanding game at the plate going 3 for 3 with two runs and two RBI. Assisting her in the Sycamore offensive explosion was Senior Stephanie Spychaj who went 1 for 3 with two runs and three RBI, hitting her first homerun of the year in the 4th inning. Sophomore Meredith Simpson went 2 for 2 with two runs and two RBI of her own while Senior Yvette Tovar added a 1 for 2 performance with one run and one RBI.

With the split the Sycamores record moves to (18-21, 4-12 MVC) and the Bears bolstered their record to (19-23, 8-9 MVC).
