TRACK AND FIELD RECOGNIZED
FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Indiana State track and field
was honored with 36 athletes being named Verizon Scholar-Athletes
on Monday night at the annual Verizon Scholar-Athlete Banquet. Individuals
on the track team were also honored and recognized as Presidential
Scholar-Athletes, Gillum Award winners and members of the 2006 Verizon
Sycamore All-Academic Team.
The list of honorees for Verizon Scholar-Athletes included Sean
Bowman, Jason Carruthers, Jake Conn, Jordan Fife, Erik Forehand,
Benjamin Gradle, Jacob Hack, John Lambertus, Todd Lange, Joshua
Lee, John Nay, Justin Pyle, David Santelik, Charles Sparks, Kyle
Walsh and Blaine Zimmerman for the men and Lisa Barrett, Leah Durr,
Laura Engle, Sarah Engle, Amanda Finch, Courtney Hull, Sarah Jarvis,
Carolyn Magley, Samantha McClendon, Danielle Prince, Margaret Reyling,
Hannah Smith, Santia Spight, Heather Stembridge, Randi Stephens,
Ashley Taflinger, Maile Venable, Ebony White, Yolanda Wright and
Jillian Yorn for the women.
John Nay was the recipient of the Gillum award that acknowledges
a graduating student-athlete who has attained the highest grade
point average while displaying outstanding leadership abilities.
Nay, a senior, has maintained a perfect 4.0 while studying Mathematics.
Amanda Finch, Jake Hack, Todd Lange, John Nay and Sarah Engle joined
a group of 13 athletes to form the 2006 Verizon Sycamore All-Academic
team with the lowest G.P.A. in the group being a 3.78.
Jordan Fife and Yolanda Wright were honored with the Presidential
Scholar-Athlete award that is given to recognize athletic accomplishments,
academic achievements, qualities of leadership and service to the
University and community. This award also distinguishes an individual
who will use the experiences of intercollegiate athletics participation
to make a positive contribution to his and her profession and community.
Fife is a Social Science Education major and carries a 3.38 grade
point average. He is a member of the ISU men’s cross country
and track and field teams. He was a 2005 Academic All-American and
is a six-time member of the MVC All-Academic Team. He is the sixth
winner from the men’s track and field program in the award’s
ten years.
Wright owns a 3.50 GPA in Chemistry. A member of the women’s
track and field team, she is a two-time Arthur Ashe Scholar and
a four-time Verizon Scholar-Athlete. Wright has also been a member
of the Dean’s List at ISU.
The awards and recognition are a reflection of the dedication that
the track and field program, coaches and athletes included, have
in their commitment to academics as part of their athletic success.
