SYCAMORES WRAP-UP EXHIBITION PLAY WITH 86-62 WIN

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. –  The Indiana State women’s basketball team closed out its exhibition schedule with an 86-62 victory over the Lewis University Flyers Wednesday night (Nov. 10) at Hulman Center.

The Sycamores were led by junior guard Lisa Verhoff who posted a game-high 30 points. Verhoff hit 10-of-17 from the floor, knocking down all eight of the Sycamores’ three pointers. The Elyria, Ohio native added two points from the free throw line in 28 minutes of play.

“Lewis is very well-coached,” said head coach Jim Wiedie. “We were totally outplayed in every aspect of the game in the first half. They came to play, and they deserve credit for that.”

Indiana State jumped out to a quick 18-6 lead, paced by two baskets apiece from freshman forward Laura Rudolphi and senior forward Nikki Hall as well as two three-pointers by Verhoff. The Flyers would answer with a seven-zero run to bring the Sycamores lead within five, at 18-13.

The two teams went back-and-forth towards the end of the first 20 minutes of play, with the Sycamores never being able to extend their lead to more than 10 points after the 8:30 mark. Lewis continued to chip away at the ISU lead and went on an 8-0 run to close out the half, giving the Flyers a one-point lead at halftime, 34-33.

ISU came out with a sense of urgency in the beginning of the second half, using a 13-0 run to jump out to a 46-34 lead. The Sycamores’ defense showed its fangs in the second stanza, forcing 17 turnovers and holding the Flyers to 27.3 percent from behind the three point arc in the last 20 minutes of play.

The Sycamores finished with four players in double figures. In addition to Verhoff’s contributions, Rudolphi scored 16 points going 5-of-11 from the floor and hitting all six of her free throw attempts. Sophomore forward Rachel Maenpaa scored a personal-best 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Senior Nikki Hall added 11 points en route to the Sycamores’ 24 point victory.

ISU was able to force 31 Lewis turnovers, while the Flyers out-rebounded the Sycamores 43-42.

The Sycamores will begin their regular-season ledger on Friday, November 19 when they open at Miami (Ohio). Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
