INDIANA STATE PICKS UP EASY
QUARTERFINAL VICTORY OVER CREIGHTON
SPRINGFIELD, Mo.
– Indiana
State
used a pair of early second half runs to put space between them
and a pesky Creighton squad as the Sycamores earned a
quarterfinal victory over the Bluejays at the 2006 State Farm
Missouri Valley Conference Tournament by a 73-51 count.
Indiana
State
improves to 25-4 while Creighton dropped to 8-21.
With the Sycamores leading by
a slim 29-25 margin at the half, ISU put together a 6-0 spurt
after the break for a 35-25 cushion at the 18:40 mark. Following
a pair of jump shots for Creighton senior Angie Janis, the
Sycamores rattled off the game’s next nine points to open up a
48-29 lead. The Sycamores outscored the ‘Jays 19-4 in the second
stanza’s first five minutes.
A turnaround jumper by senior
Ashley Clark with 2:10 left in the game gave the Sycamores its
largest lead of the game at 26, 73-47. Janis added the game’s final
points for the 73-51 final margin.
The contest was back-and-forth
over the first 10 minutes of the game and was tied for fourth time
at the 10:23 mark at 16
when Creighton’s Kelsey Crites drained a 3-pointer. ISU rattled off
the game’s next nine points for a 25-16 lead that they would never
relinquish.
Melanie Boeglin paced the
Sycamores with 21 points in the contest, going 8-of-12 from the
field. She added five free throws while pulling down six rebounds,
dishing out three assists and recording a trio of steals. ISU junior
Stephanie Lisch added 14 points with five steals in the game.
Janis paced the ‘Jays with 22
points and 10 rebounds while sophomore Ally Thrall scored 12 points.
The ‘Jays held a 41-29 advantage
on the boards, and pulled down 19 offensive rebounds. Creighton
converted 17 second chance points in the game.
The Sycamore defense clamped down,
especially in the second half, as they forced Creighton into 24
turnovers, converting them into 31 Sycamore points. The Sycamores
coughed the ball up just 11 times.
Indiana
State
now awaits the winner of today’s quarterfinal contest between
Evansville and Wichita
State.
ISU takes on the winner of the contest in the tournament’s first
semifinal contest on Saturday beginning at
2:05 p.m.
