MELANIE BOEGLIN NAMED KODAK/WBCA
ALL-AMERICA FINALIST
ATLANTA –
Indiana State senior point guard Melanie
Boeglin, winner of the 2006 Jackie Stiles Missouri Valley
Conference Player of the Year Award as well as the Prairie Farms
MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award was named today (March 14)
as a finalist for the Kodak/Women’s Basketball Coaches’
Association (WBCA) All-America Basketball Team. She is one of 48
athletes nationwide to make the finalist list, including six
from WBCA Region 6.
Boeglin is the first player in the history of the
MVC to earn both the Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the
Year Awards in the same season. She is a four-time All-MVC performer
and was the 2005 MVC Defensive Player of the Year. An ESPN The
Magazine Academic All-America selection, Boeglin is the school’s
all-time leader in career assists (677), steals (431), and free
throws made (571). She ranks first in The Valley all-time for
assists and steals while ranking third in free throws.
This season she is averaging a career-best 18.3
points per game and pulls down 4.5 boards. Boeglin has dished out a
career single-season best 209 assists this season. She tied the NCAA
single-game high for the year by scoring 46 points in a double
overtime victory at Drake (Jan. 26). Her 19 assists at Eastern
Kentucky (Dec. 20) are also an NCAA best this season.
Joining Boeglin on the WBCA Region 6 list are
Jessica Davenport of Ohio State, Katie Gearlds of Purdue, Kari Koch
of Missouri State, Liz Shimek of Michigan State and Crystal Smith of
Iowa.
The 48 finalists, were determined by a vote of
WBCA member coaches in each of the eight WBCA geographical regions,
and are now in the running for selection to the 10-member Kodak/WBCA
All-America Team.
The NCAA Division I Kodak/WBCA All-America
Basketball Team will be announced at a press conference inside the
Westin Copley Place on April 1, 2006 during Final Four Weekend at
Boston, Mass.
Boeglin and the rest of the Sycamores return to
action in the opening round of the WNIT versus Eastern Michigan on
Thursday, March 16 at Hulman Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:05
p.m. (EST).
