FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INDIANA STATE ANNOUNCES
2006-07 NON-CONFERENCE BASKETBALL SCHEDULE
TERRE
HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State head women’s basketball coach
Jim Wiedie announced today (July 13) the completion of the
2006-07 non-conference schedule. The Sycamores will host three
games, and play eight away from Hulman Center, before opening
defense of their Missouri Valley Conference Championship in late
December.
“I think we’ve
put together a very challenging non-conference schedule,” Wiedie
commented. “Anytime you get the opportunity to play Big Ten and SEC
teams like Iowa, Michigan State and Vanderbilt, it’s a plus for your
program. In addition, we go to Wisconsin-Green Bay, Toledo and
Valparaiso. Our young players will get tested early and often during
the non-conference portion of our schedule. This should help prepare
us for MVC play.”
The Sycamore
team will feature at least eight players who did not play one season
ago. That young group will begin the season at Iowa on November 15
as the Sycamores open the road at a Big Ten school. ISU continues on
the road against Arkansas- Pine Bluff, before opening the home
portion of the schedule against Eastern Illinois. Last season, ISU
went 4-0 against teams that will reappear on this winter’s slate.
On November
24, the Sycamores will travel to its second Big Ten opponent in the
first four contests, when they take on Michigan State at the Breslin
Center. The Spartans appeared in the 2005 NCAA Final Four
Championship game, which was held in Indianapolis.
ISU will face
off against Loyola-Chicago on November 28, before taking on
Valparaiso in the State Farm Classic inside Hinkle Fieldhouse on
December 2. Following a home game against Youngstown State on
December 6, the Sycamores will travel to face Wisconsin-Green Bay on
December 9.
Following a
week-long break for Final Exams, ISU finishes off the non-conference
schedule with a trip to Toledo on December 17, and an appearance in
the Vanderbilt Holiday Tournament on December 21 & 22.
It is
interesting to note, that as part of the signed contracts for this
season, national powers Vanderbilt and Michigan State will make
return trips to Hulman Center during the 2007-08 season.
The complete
MVC schedule will be announced in late August; however the league
has announced that the 2007 State Farm MVC Tournament will be held
from March 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa.
