BOX SCORE (HTML)
INDIANAPOLIS –
Indiana State used an
effective offensive combined with timely defense down the
stretch to down Valparaiso by a score of 83-71 in the 2006 State
Farm Hoosier Classic played at Butler’s Hinkle Fieldhouse this
afternoon. ISU improved to 4-2, while the Crusaders fell to 4-3.
Trailing
51-46 with 14:47 left in the game, Indiana State heated up with
a an 11-2 over the next two minutes fueled by a three-point play
from Kara Schilli as well as two 3-pointers from junior Angela
Phillips.
Phillips
was generally the gas that the Sycamores cooked with on the day
as she posted a career-best 21 points and was credited with nine
assists for the second consecutive game. She hit 6-of-10 shots
from long range in playing 35 minutes.
ISU’s
other Phillips, Leah Phillips was bombs away on the day as she
hit 5-of-12 3-pointers and posted 17 points in the victory.
Inside,
ISU held their own against the taller Crusaders, with senior
Rachel Maenpaa overcoming foul trouble to score 17 points, while
junior Laura Rudolphi scored 14.
On the
day, the Sycamores hit 13-of-30 shots from long range, and were
effective in running the offense as they posted 27 assists on 28
made field goals. ISU hit 46.7% of their shots from the field,
and turned the ball over just 11 times.
ISU led
41-38 at the half, but an early Valpo run gave them a 51-46
advantage with 14:47 left. That is when the Sycamores cranked up
the defense and used their depth to wear down the Crusaders. ISU
outscored the Valpo bench by a 20-7 margin.
“We dug
down deep when we need to today,” head coach Jim Wiedie said. “I
didn’t really recognize our team for the first 25 minutes of
this game, but Angela Phillips really took over the game and led
us to victory. We really cranked up our pace the last 15 minutes
to get a win over a quality Valpo game.”
ISU
continues its non-conference season on Wednesday, December 6
when they host Youngstown State at Hulman Center. Tip-off is set
for 7:00 p.m. (ET).
